5WEST Interview Session

5WEST Interview Session

Caleb Duke, Owen Pastore, Jon Paul Nesheiwat and Peet Montzingo from 5WEST made waves last year when they performed at Gran Canaria Pride, The President’s Ball in Cape Town and supported Boyzone on their UK tour. Their debut single “Stars About You” entered both Billboard’s Top 30 chart and Music Week’s top 10, garnering them worldwide attention and signing with world leading live agency Martial Arts (P!NK, Sir Paul McCartney and Elton John are now also signed and have just released brand new single One Shot; an R&B-tinged pop piece featuring catchy chorus that won’t let go for days!

As part of their release of this beautiful song, they released its music video directed by Samuel Womer – watch below!

I had the chance to ask some of the guys some questions about themselves so we could get to know them better – which can be found below!

First and foremost, I want to tell you how much I enjoy your new single “One Shot,” with its captivating melodies and infectious chorus. Can you share more information about its recording process and working with Bryan Todd?
Jon Paul: Working with Bryan Todd is always an unforgettable experience for us. His infectious mix of good vibes, energy, and creativity never ceases to impress – never failing to raise the bar with each recording session we create together.

Owen – Could this be the first taste of an upcoming full-length studio album?uiesc Yes, but at present our focus lies in getting out some solid singles.

Caleb- My musical inspirations would include 1975, John Mayer, Tom Misch, and Jon Bellion – their style has inspired my writing and creating and vice versa.

How would you describe your sound? Peet – Our music has always had a pop influence but has recently developed an urban edge. Additionally, we value harmony-rich melodies as part of the experience.

Can you explain how 5West came together, as well as its namesake’s meaning?
Jon Paul explains: The name 5west comes from where our auditions took place: Los Angeles on the West Coast of the US. Initially we planned for five members; however we ended up keeping only four. Even so, people always ask why our band is named 5west; it often becomes a topic of conversation among friends or strangers alike! When people ask why we call ourselves 5west when there are only four of us! So sometimes we like to poke fun at ourselves when asked that question!

How is a typical working day like for you guys, and do you tend to hang out when not working?
Owen – Unfortunately since quarantine began we’ve only been able to work together a handful of days at once; but zoom calls are constant where content creation happens and brainstorming ensues.

Your 2019 has been truly exceptional and remarkable; performing all over the world and supporting Boyzone on their UK tour. What was your favourite performance venue?
Peet: Each venue had its own special charm that we could feel while walking backstage. A variety of iconic artists had graced these halls over time and you could sense their presence.
