Michael Malarkey has just released his debut EP “Captain Solitaire”, available now through Hudson Records.
This three track EP showcases his impressive songwriting skills and beautiful baritone vocals, as well as their expressive showreel of mixed emotions and reflection on isolation in today’s society – building upon his debut album Mongrels while providing a hint at what lies ahead! Check it out now below!
After listening to these three remarkable songs, I had the privilege of interviewing Michael about his EP, how he balances acting and singing careers, and more. Check it out below!
As an avid listener of your debut album, Mongrels, I was very eager to hear more of your music. Your latest EP addresses loneliness and isolation themes; what was its inspiration?
Initial plans called for me to release four B-sides from Mongrels sessions as an EP; however, after touring I began writing more songs that went in different directions than planned. Captain Solitaire was one of my original songs I composed while shooting The Oath in Puerto Rico and when it came time to mix the EP in Atlanta we decided to include it. Additionally, Bloody Nose from London which we recorded that fall was also included as well. Friends was the sole track from Mongrels sessions I included for Captain Solitaire; all other tracks sounded fantastic but weren’t reflective of my new direction. Though it might sound cliche, Captain Solitaire really is my “bridging piece” between Mongrels and my next album.
How do you balance both acting and music careers as a successful actor?
As far as touring goes, I just take it day-by-day. There will inevitably be hurdles and conflicts along the way that need resolving, like when I had to cancel some dates of my previous tour in order to film Project Blue Book series reruns – so my team blocked off time from this current tour so as to prevent having to cancel dates twice in succession – ultimately it all comes down to making decisions with your gut, trusting yourself and remaining calm under pressure.
My favorite track from this EP is Bloody Nose. The haunting piano keys and its melancholic atmosphere just give me chills – what were you experiencing at that time that inspired such an emotive composition?
I tend not to elaborate too much on song meanings and other details. Ultimately, it’s up to each listener. Not everything is as obvious as it may appear – sometimes I can imagine scenarios while writing lyrics/music for them!
What musical inspirations inspire your work, and how are these influencing it?
Over the years, so many bands and artists have inspired me, making it difficult to pinpoint exactly where my influences come from. Tom Waits to Grimes have all inspired my musical aesthetic, while I simply write whatever interests or excites me at any given time.
Who would be your dream collaboration partner?
The Bad Seeds! As part of your European tour later this month, what venue are you most excited to play at and what can audiences expect from your performances?
